To me, no other 1940s fountain pen embodies the phrase I wrote more than the oversize Sheaffer Sentinel Deluxe. A gorgeous pen, with every detail being as beautiful as it is functional. These days, customers are willing to pay a premium for larger vintage pens, as our handwriting has changed over the decades and larger pens tend to feel more comfortable. This pen will not disappoint. It's one of the largest pens Sheaffer made in the first half of the 20th. century, measuring around 5 1/4" capped and 0.5" barrel diameter. The pen posts deep and securely, becoming a truly oversize pen that will fit a large hand comfortably.
The pen is made of beautiful striated Marine Green celluloid, with a transparent barrel. The material took up to two years worth of processing, curing, and drying so that it could become deep, rich, vibrant, and robust. You can watch the pen being filled and gauge ink level with ease. Notice that the section is made to match the barrel perfectly. This was an early design and it is exceedingly rare today. The pen is in excellent cosmetic condition, without any flaws or defects, only very minor surface wear. The two-tone can is in equally good shape, as is the gold-filled trim.
The pen is a fantastic performer! The Triumph nib, designed on the rocker principle, is firm, but smooth and soft of paper. It is forgiving of angle, rotation, and grip, and will even write upside down to give you a hairline. A true workhorse of a pen, this was the top-of-the-line pen for Sheaffer in the 1940s when the company was, arguably, at the peak of its technological prowess. The tipping material is of traditional geometry, so you should expect a beautiful, smooth, consistent Fine line.
