(SOLD) This is a late 1930s Sheaffer Balance Vac in Golden Brown celluloid, with a 14k gold Feathertouch Fine nib. The pen has been restored, which included a complete disassembly, a thorough cleaning, an overhaul of the filling mechanism, ink flow adjustment, nib tuning, and a gentle hand polish. This pen is known as the "short and slender" model of the Balance line, measuring around 4.8" capped, with a barrel diameter of 0.42".
When I pick pens for restoration, I am motivated by their writing potential. Yes, I want them to be beautiful and in decent condition, but the most important factor for me is performance. This particular Sheaffer Balance is no different. Made of beautiful, gleaming Golden Brown celluloid, with excellent barrel transparency, and a vacuum filling mechanism, this pen comes with a fantastic 14k gold Feathertouch Fine nib. The nib writes under the lightest touch, but you can press harder and it will give you a pleasant springiness that only a vintage pen can. The nib is smooth, but not overpolished, so it will write a confident, consistent, and generous line. I tuned it on the wet side, as I've been getting requests from people wanting to enjoy their inks' shading and sheening properties. This pen would make an ideal on-the-go writer! It'll fit into the pen loop of your favorite journal, and will be a perfect companion for those writing sessions at your favorite coffee shop or outdoor location.
The pen holds an astounding 1.7 ml of ink, if filled with the two-stroke technique. The filling mechanism, beautiful in its simplicity, will fill the pen easily and efficiently. The amount of ink stored inside the transparent barrel will last, potentially, weeks worth of writing. However, I have a feeling, you'll be burning through ink fast! This pen is so much joy to use. BTW, the dark lines you see on the nib are shadows, as the nib has a shiny gold surface.
