This is a rare Sheaffer Triumph Valiant 1250 Vac-filled fountain pen and pencil set in striated Marine Green celluloid. The pen has been restored, which included a complete disassembly, thorough cleaning, an overhaul of the filling mechanism (according to best practices and with high-quality materials), ink flow adjustment, nib tuning, and a gentle polish. The pencil has also been brought back to excellent functional and cosmetic condition.
This is a large pen! It measures 5-3/16" capped, with a barrel diameter of 0.49" and it features the section made to match the barrel in striated celluloid pattern. These pens were made for a limited time in the early 1940s, as the US enter Word War II and Sheaffer was tasked with high-precision manufacturing of components for the war effort.
As Sheaffer entered the war, it had a 40% preference rating, out of over fifty fountain pen brands in the US. That's success of staggering proportions, in a highly competitive market. Sheaffer claimed that the key to its success was quality, in ever aspect of its business activity. From the use of gold and highest-quality celluloid, to its excellent relationship with dealers nationwide, Sheaffer was the leader of the pen industry.
No other pen represents that leadership than the large Sheaffer Triumph Valiant. A gorgeous, oversize pen (at least by vintage standards), this pen oozes quality. It starts with the material. It has incredible depth, chatoyancy, unmatched by any modern acrylics. The filling mechanism, second to none in efficiency, reliability, and ink capacity, was perfected by Sheaffer, and it remains a highly coveted method of filling a fountain pen today. The Triumph nib, with its two writing surfaces and a wraparound design, was excellent at preventing unwanted burping and regulating ink flow to perfection. The feed was largely sheltered by 14k gold, which offer excellent resiliency against drying out, even if left uncapped. A true workhorse of a pen!
The set comes with a matching mechanical pencil (using 0.9 mm refills), both in excellent working and cosmetic condition. There are no flaws or defects. Only minor surface wear. The nib writes Sheaffer's "standard" Fine line, which is extremely self-assured. It never falters, never hesitates, and writes under the lightest touch. This set will not disappoint. A gorgeous example of this 1940s classic.
