Sheaffer Triumph Valiant Vac Oversize, Marine Green, XF

(SOLD) This is a mid-1940s White Dot Sheaffer Triumph Valiant Vac-filler Oversize fountain pen in Marine Green striated celluloid, with a 14k gold, two-tone Triumph Lifetime Extra-Fine nib. The pen has been restored, which included a complete disassembly, a thorough cleaning, an overhaul of the filling mechanism, ink flow adjustment, a nib tune-up, and a gentle polish with a soft cloth (by hand). I work according to current "best practices" in pen restoration, and, in the case of Sheaffer Vac pens I completely replace the original "packing" material with high-quality modern materials. This was the largest model in Sheaffer's wartime line-up, measuring 5.25" capped and 0.49" in diameter.

The quote I wrote comes from a Sheaffer advertisement. It does sound a little trite, but, once you've had a chance to experience the Sheaffer Triumph pen from the 1940s, you realize that it is the pinnacle of fountain pen design. What I mean by "design" is features that enhance the pen's utility as a writing instrument. While modern pen makers prioritize ornamentation and luxurious appearance, Sheaffer focused on performance, including the pen's filling mechanism and writing ability. Every feature of this pen is there for a reason - to make writing smooth and easy, dependable and consistent. Of course, the Iowa company didn't forget to make the pen beautiful, did they?

The large Triumph nib lays down a smooth line of about 0.3 mm. It is consistent, controlled, but still generous enough to be enjoyable. It's a rare XF nib that never feels toothy and does not catch the paper, regardless of your holding angle and rotation about the page. Are you a finger writer? Do you write with a heavy hand? Do you rotate the nib from letter to letter? Do you write rapidly? No problem! This nib can take all of that in stride.

The pen is in excellent condition, with gorgeous, gleaming celluloid and shiny gold-filled trim. The pen looks truly handsome, with a clear ink window and a strong imprint. The filling mechanism works efficiently, holding up to 2 ml of ink (using the two-stroke filling method). The pen is fairly large and it posts beautifully, allowing it to be comfortable even for people with large hands.
