(SOLD) This is a mid-1940s White Dot Sheaffer Triumph Valiant Vac Oversize fountain pen in Black, with a 14k gold, two-tone, Lifetime Triumph XF nib. The pen has been restored, which included a complete disassembly, a thorough cleaning, an overhaul of the filling mechanism (using current "best practices"), ink flow adjustment, a nib tune-up, and a gentle polish by hand with a soft cloth. This is the largest model in Sheaffer's Triumph line-up, measuring 5.26" capped and 0.49" in diameter. The pen posts beautifully so it should be comfortable even for people with large hands.
The Triumph Valiant Vac Oversize was Sheaffer's flagship model, marketed primarily to men, professionals, upwardly mobile white-collar workers. However, it was also a pen that was broadly used in various environments, including out in the field, at sea, and in the air. A true workhorse pen, today, it would make a statement in your office and would make a fantastic, daily "all-around" writer. The classic black with gold-filled trim, Sheaffer's form-factor (used previously in the Balance line) gave rise to many classic pens, including the Montblanc 146 and Aurora 88 Large. It's in exceedingly great condition, and now it can be yours at the fraction of the price of its modern look-alike German and Italian pens.
The Triumph nib is a dream to write with! Laying down an XF line (0.3 mm on my paper), the nib glides across the page without effort, as if gliding, even hovering above the surface of the paper. A firm point of narrow width, it writes without the toothiness typically associated with XF nibs. One of the best XF writers ever made, vintage or modern. This is an excellent pen with which to write a business cursive or M. Sull's American Cursive Handwriting. It excels at writing consistent, long strokes in all directions, without catching the paper, being forgiving of holding angle and rotation. In addition, the vacuum filling mechanism works efficiently and holds a lot of ink. You even get a nice ink window to gauge how much ink remains in the barrel.
Cosmetically, this is a beautiful specimen, with smooth, deep, and rich Black plastic and excellent gold-filled trim. The imprint is strong, the section transparency excellent. There are no flaws or defects, and the pen looks gorgeous. If you enjoy classic pens, look no further. Why spend hundreds on a new Montblanc or Aurora if you can have this vintage beauty, restored, and ready to write.
