Parker 51 Vacumatic, Black, M

(ON HOLD) This is a 1945 Blue Diamond Parker 51 Vacumatic in Black, with a 14k gold Medium nib. The pen has been restored, which included a complete disassembly, a thorough cleaning, an overhaul of the filling mechanism, adjustment of ink flow, a nib tune-up, and a gentle polish with a soft cloth (by hand). I work according to current "best practices" in pen restoration and I use high-quality replacement materials.

The phrase I wrote comes from a Parker 51 advertisement, in which the company implied the extremely complex construction, superb skill, and a lot of personal attention required to manufacture the pen. The ad was accompanied by a picture of the collector (see the photo above) to illustrate the point. The collector was part of an elaborate ink buffering and ink flow control mechanism that has proven to be unmatched by any system devised since. In short, no modern pen can boast a writing performance that is as dependable and enjoyable as that of the Parker 51. Yes, the pen is not for everyone, but many of those who allowed themselves to try it, ended up with sizeable 51 collections, years of reliable service, and a lot of fun.

This particular 51 comes vested with a rare Medium nib. The nib probably sold as a Broad, as it lays down a fat line (0.6 mm on my business paper) that is incredibly satisfying. I realize I've let down a lot of you who love broader nibs recently, as most of my pens have featured very fine nibs, but I hope this pen will not disappoint you. A lot of modern pen makers choose smoothness over writing performance, as the market seems to demand it. As a result, you end up with a nib that feels incredibly smooth but is plagued with performance issues, such as hard-starts and skips. The issues are caused by the writing surface being overly polished at the factory. This 51, however, writes incredibly smoothly, but without any of the above problems. A fantastic writer, tuned just north of average in wetness, it will give you that gliding sensation and reward you with a line that will bring out the beauty, shading, and sheen of your favorite inks.

Cosmetically, this classic Black pen is flawless. The material has a deep, rich, and vibrant color, and a glossy surface. The cap and the gold-filled trim are in equally excellent shape. The imprint is strong. Quite simply, this is a beautiful specimen of the classic 51 Vac.
