Sheaffer Triumph Valiant Oversize Pen and Pencil Set, Golden Brown, F

(Sold) This is a 1942 White Dot Sheaffer Triumph Valiant Oversize fountain pen and mechanical pencil set in original box, in Golden Brown celluloid, with a matching striated section, a transparent barrel, gold-filled trim, and a 14k gold, two-tone Lifetime Triumph Fine nib. The pen has been restored, which included a complete disassembly, a gentle cleaning, an overhaul of the filling mechanism, ink flow adjustment, a nib tune-up, and a gentle polish with a soft cloth. The pencil has also been restored to full function, it takes standard 0.9 mm refills, available today.

Sheaffer Triumph Valiant Oversize Pen and Pencil Set, Golden Brown, F, uncapped, with the plunger partially extended

Sheaffer's crowning achievement, the now very rare Oversize Valiant, with the efficient, high-capacity vacuum filling mechanism (up to 1.8 ml using the two-stroke method), made out of the gorgeous striated Golden Brown celluloid, with a matching section, a transparent barrel, and, of course, the Lifetime Triumph nib. In my opinion, this particular model is the Iowa company's greatest technological accomplishment. A perfect marriage of design and engineering, a union so desirable and yet so elusive.

Sheaffer Triumph Valiant Oversize Pen and Pencil Set, Golden Brown, F, nib profile showing excellent tipping geometry and alignment. Also note the clear barrel transparency

The pen is large, by vintage standards, it posts very well, and so it should be comfortable to hold for most fountain pen enthusiasts. With its superb ergonomics, a slightly textured section, the pen will lend itself to hours of effortless writing. The Triumph nib is so forgiving, so smooth, capable of rapid strokes in virtually all directions. Whether you're right or left-handed, whether you use the tripod or the death grip, whether you right with a featherweight pressure or a heavy hand, the nib will conform to your needs with willingness and ease. It lays down a standard Sheaffer Fine line of about 0.4 mm (on my paper), which puts it in-between modern Western XF and F. The nib is firm, but feels somewhat soft on paper. It's not glassy smooth, but it's not meant to be! It has just enough tooth to provide a seamless connection to the paper, but without feeling unpleasant in any way.

Sheaffer Triumph Valiant Oversize Pen and Pencil Set, Golden Brown, F, capped

The set is in excellent condition and comes in its original box. There's one small round blemish on the pencil's body, possibly a flaw in the material, but it's hard to say. It's small, but it's there, so I must point it out. Otherwise, the set is in fantastic shape, with a truly beautiful, vibrant, rich celluloid, excellent barrel transparency, and a strong imprint.

Sheaffer Triumph Vac Fountain Pen, Carmine Red, XXF, uncapped, with the plunger partially extended

I have been hoping to have a nice offer during the holiday season, and I am so excited to have found a great Sheaffer pen and pencil set for you this year. This is a superb kit, ideal for the passionate writer. If you write a business cursive, Spencerian penmanship, or American Cursive Handwriting, this set will work like a dream. Whether you're an experienced scribe or just starting out, having the right tool is crucial, and, fortunately, this wartime fountain pen is among the best cursive writers I've ever tested. And, best of all, it is in awesome shape!

Sheaffer Triumph Vac Fountain Pen, Carmine Red, XXF, nib profile, showing excellent tipping geometry and alignment. Also, note the transparent barrel showing the background through.

What makes this fountain pen a superb cursive writer is the very fact that it was designed, from ground up, specifically, for business penmanship. Made during an era when handwriting ruled supreme, the Triumph is an utterly enjoyable writing instrument, rewarding its owner with consistent and forgiving performance, day in, day out. The Triumph nib, designed on the "rocker" principle, offers a firm, yet cushioned ride, accommodating a variety of grips, angles, and degrees of writing pressure. Despite having a very fine point (0.3 mm on my paper), it never feels scratchy, or even toothy, never catching the paper, even in rapid upward strokes, virtually regardless of its rotation about the page. And if you need an ultra XF line, simply flip it upside down, it was designed to write that way, too!

Sheaffer Triumph Vac Fountain Pen, Carmine Red, XXF, close-up of the beautiful material and strong imprint

The high-capacity, efficient vacuum-filled mechanism ensures long writing sessions between fills, and the transparent barrel allows you to see the ink sloshing around inside it. The gleaming, shimmering celluloid has a deep, rich, vibrant color and awesome chatoyancy. The gold-filled trim is in equally great shape, adding a tiny bit of luxury and "bling" to the set. Last. but not least, the pencil works flawlessly, comes with a full eraser, and is ready for the standard 0.9 mm refill.

Sheaffer Triumph Vac Fountain Pen and Pencil Set, Golden Brown, XF

(Sold) This is a c. 1942 Sheaffer Triumph Vac fountain pen and mechanical pencil set in striated Golden Brown celluloid, with gold-filled trim, and a 14k gold, two-tone Triumph Lifetime XF nib. The pen has been restored, which included a complete disassembly, a gentle cleaning, an overhaul of the filling mechanism, ink flow adjustment, nib tuning, and a gentle polish with a soft cloth. I work according to current best practices in pen restoration, and I use the highest quality replacement materials.

Sheaffer Triumph Vac Fountain Pen and Pencil Set, Golden Brown, XF, uncapped, with the plunger partially extended

In my opinion, Sheaffer's Triumph gold point was the Iowa company's greatest achievement. It was a significant departure from anything that had come before. An entirely new, self-contained, efficient,  reliable system for delivering ink on paper. Today, we use fountain pens for fun, but back in the 1940s, they were indispensable tools, used all day, every day in all kinds of environments. A conventional fountain pen's Achilles heel was its somewhat unreliable, wet flow, which often caused problems, particularly on ordinary office paper. Such pens were also notorious for variability in performance as a function of grip, writing pressure, holding angle, even atmospheric conditions. Pen companies embarked on the pursuit of the Holy Grail of writing instruments, a pen that's as comfortable as it is reliable, as forgiving as it is precise, and as functional as it is beautiful. Both Parker and Sheaffer designed their ultimate pens, though they took entirely different approaches. For Parker, it was the 51, for Sheaffer, the Triumph vacuum filler.

Sheaffer Triumph Vac Fountain Pen and Pencil Set, Golden Brown, XF, nib profile, showing excellent tipping geometry and alignment

The pen I'm offering today is a fantastic specimen of this wartime model. Made of the gleaming, shimmering, semi-transparent Golden Brown celluloid, with impeccable gold-filled trim, this is a gorgeous pen. It's a full-size pen,  measuring around 5.1" capped and 0.45" in diametervery comfortable to hold, posted or not. The pen fills efficiently, holding a lot of ink (up to 1.7 ml using the two-stroke method). The nib delivers a steady, yet controlled flow of ink, laying down a consistent line of about 0.4 mm (on my paper). It's smooth without compromising its writing ability, and it's capable of writing rapid strokes  in virtually all directions (including curves). Unlike conventional nibs, the Triumph resists drying out, even if left uncapped for a while. The nib's incredibly forgiving of your grip and writing pressure. It has that awesome willingness, such a resolute, paper-grabbing, line drawing ability, with every stroke, the nib just wants to go forward, as if attacking the page, providing a direct conduit to your thoughts. The geometry of the Triumph nib (with the characteristic upturned tip) is the continuation of everything Sheaffer had learned in their famous R&D labs, and a brilliant achievement of design and engineering. And, the best part is, now this pen and pencil set can be yours!

Sheaffer Snorkel Admiral Fountain Pen and Pencil Set, XXF

(On Hold) This is a 1950s Sheaffer Snorkel Admiral Fountain Pen and Pencil set in the original box, in Black, with gold-filled trim, and a 14k gold XXF (needlepoint) nib. The pen has been restored, which included a complete disassembly, a gentle cleaning, an overhaul of the filling mechanism, ink flow adjustment, a nib tune-up, and a gentle polish with a soft cloth. The pencil has been restored to proper functionality. It takes standard 0.9 mm refills.

Sheaffer Snorkel Admiral Fountain Pen and Pencil Set, XXF, uncapped

To most fountain pen enthusiasts, the name "Snorkel" evokes this incredibly sophisticated, somewhat obscure filling mechanism, and an altogether odd pen. While that might be true, the pen's most important feature, its incredible writing performance, is often overlooked. Whether it's the Triumph or the conventional open nib, the Snorkel can write! The pen I'm offering today comes with a fantastic XXF (needlepoint) nib that writes a consistent monoline of about 0.2 mm (on my paper) in virtually all directions, without ever catching the paper or feeling scratchy.

If you love writing small, if you write a business cursive, or if you simply need a great office pen to perform very well on all kinds of unfriendly paper, this pen will be a great fit for you. And, if you need to use a great mechanical pencil, it's right there, in the same box.

There's one detail that I must disclose. The set came to me from the original owner, who had the cap replaced at some point. The cap appears to be from the Triumph model, which makes no difference other than the presence of the White Dot. Otherwise, the set is in excellent condition.

Sheaffer Triumph Valiant Oversize Fountain Pen and Pencil Set, Golden Brown, XF

(Sold) This is a c. 1942 White Dot Sheaffer Triumph Valiant Oversize ("1250") fountain pen in striated Golden Brown celluloid, gold-filled trim, and a 14k gold, two-tone Lifetime Triumph XF nib. The pen has been restored, which included a complete disassembly, a thorough cleaning, an overhaul of the filling mechanism, ink flow adjustment, a nib tune-up, and a gentle polish with a soft cloth. The pencil has also been restored to full functionality, except the eraser is used up. The pen measures about 5.2" capped and 0.49" in diameter.

Sheaffer Triumph Valiant Oversize Fountain Pen and Pencil Set, Golden Brown, XF, uncapped, with the plunger partially extended

Sheaffer's advertising slogan, "This is the time to write," fits the Valiant I'm offering today perfectly! This is, truly, the kind of pen that just wants you to write with it and rewards you, each and every time, with incredibly satisfying, dependable performance. A large pen, the Valiant fits your hand like a glove, posted or not, and gives you that highly desirable cushioned ride across the paper. The nib is firm and has an XF point (about 0.3 mm on my paper), yet avoids feeling toothy, much like a lot of modern nibs of equal width do. That's thanks to the Iowa company's ingenious "rocker" design of the Triumph nib. It's a nib that doesn't have to be overpolished to feel smooth, and, as a result, never falters, never skips, or starves for ink.

Sheaffer Triumph Valiant Oversize Fountain Pen and Pencil Set, Golden Brown, XF, nib tune-up

This is a somewhat rare model with a matching striated section and a transparent barrel, which also serves as an ink reservoir. This is preferred by collectors over the later model, which comes with a black section and a plastic inner sleeve, a sort of cartridge for storing ink inside the pen. The pen is made of the beautiful, striated celluloid that explodes into a multitude of shimmering tones, with incredible depth and chatoyancy. It's also very vibrant, with a deep, rich, gleaming dominant browns. The vacuum filing mechanism has been completely rebuilt, works efficiently, and holds up to 1.8 ml of ink (using the two-stroke method). There are no flaws or defects, either in the material or gold-filled trim, and the imprint is crisp. A fantastic specimen of Sheaffer's wartime flagship pen.

Sheaffer Triumph Vac Fountain Pen and Pencil Set, F

(On Hold) This is a 1942 White Dot Sheaffer Triumph Vac-filler fountain pen and mechanical pencil set in striated, semi-transparent Black celluloid, with a 14k gold, two-tone Triumph Lifetime Fine nib. The pen has been restored, which included a complete disassembly, a gentle cleaning, an overhaul of the filling mechanism, ink flow adjustment, a nib tune-up, and a gentle polish with a soft cloth. The pencil has also been restored to full functional and cosmetic condition. The set comes in the original box, also in great condition.

Sheaffer Triumph Vac Fountain Pen and Pencil Set, F, uncapped and with the plunger partially extended

In the 1940s, as the U.S., joined World War II, the fountain pen industry was faced with severe material shortages (including rationing), labor shortages, and a difficult economic and political climate. In addition, Sheaffer was tasked by the U.S. Government with the manufacturing of high-precision armament components, such as bomb fuses, testament to the Iowa company's superior technological prowess. Despite all that, Sheaffer came up with one of its most successful fountain pens ever, the Triumph vacuum filler.

The set I'm offering today is a superb example of the Triumph. Made of Black celluloid, with a semi-transparent barrel, a wide gold-filled band, and vested with a phenomenal Triumph nib, the pen is a beautiful writing instrument, capable of incredible performance. The filling mechanism, which has just been completely rebuilt, works efficiently and holds a lot of ink. The nib writes an utterly enjoyable Fine line of about 0.5 mm (on my paper) that is smooth and consistent. The genius of the Triumph nib is that it feels smooth regardless of (reasonable) variations in holding angle and rotation about the page. The nib has a large "sweet spot," which allows its user to write rapid strokes in all directions, without ever skipping, skidding, or catching the paper. The oversize ebonite feed provides generous, yet controlled flow that will never run dry.

Sheaffer Triumph Vac Fountain Pen and Pencil Set, F, capped

The pen and pencil set would make a great gift; it even comes in the original box. Why not consider it as a Christmas present for a family member or a friend? I think it would be a more interesting and original gift than even the latest and greatest electronic gadget.

Sheaffer Balance Pen and Pencil Set, Marine Green, F

(SOLD) This is a mid-1930s White Dot Sheaffer Balance Fountain Pen and Pencil set in Marine Green celluloid. The pen has a 14k gold, two-tone Lifetime Fine nib. The set comes in the original box. The pen is a full-length Balance, measuring around 5.4" capped and 0.42" in diameter. The pen has been restored, which included a complete disassembly, a thorough cleaning, an overhaul of the filling mechanism, adjustment to ink flow, a nib tune-up, and a gentle polish with a soft cloth (by hand). The pencil has also been restored to full mechanical function.

Sheaffer Balance Pen and Pencil Set, Marine Green, F, uncapped

The phrase I wrote comes from a Sheaffer advertisement, emphasizing its Lifetime warranty program whereby each pen bearing the designation would receive unconditional guarantee for the lifetime of its original owner. The set appears to have been found unused, put away in a desk drawer for decades. Based on my inspection, the set does seem to be an a mint condition, with no signs of use, just very faint "handling" wear, difficult to see with the naked eye. The ink window is perfectly clear. The imprint strong.

Sheaffer Balance Pen and Pencil Set, Marine Green, F, nib profile showing excellent tipping geometry and alignment

The set's condition is its main attraction here. Imagine being transported back in time to the 1930s and purchasing this set from your local fountain pen store. It would be guaranteed for life. Now, you have a chance to own this set as though it had been preserved in a pristine condition specially for you. Pretty cool, isn't it?

I did restore the pen much like I do every other pen. I want to be sure that the pen functions as well as it's supposed to, and you will decide whether to make it your daily writer or put it away as part of your precious collection. A truly beautiful writing instrument, with gorgeous, gleaming celluloid, perfect gold-filled trim, and it even comes boxed. One does not come across such as set every day.

Sheaffer Balance Pen and Pencil Set, Marine Green, F, capped

The nib writes a confident Fine line (0.4 mm on my paper) and it's a pleasure to use. After I did my writing sample, I replaced the sac, so that when you receive the pen it'll be in 'as new" condition, ready for your favorite ink. These Lifetime nibs are excellent performers! The nib is firm, but feels soft and pleasant on paper. A joy to use!

Sheaffer Triumph Valiant Tuckaway XF, Set in Box, Carmine

(SOLD) This is an early 1940s White Dot Sheaffer Triumph Valiant Tuckaway Fountain Pen (a.k.a., "1250") and Pencil Set in striated Carmine celluloid, with a 14k gold, two-tone Triumph Extra-Fine nib and a matching pencil, in original box. The pen has been restored, which included a complete disassembly, a thorough cleaning, an overhaul of the filling mechanism (replacing existing "packing" material with modern high-quality replacement), adjustment to ink flow, a nib tune-up, and a gentle polish with a soft cloth (by hand). The pencil has been refilled with Sheaffer's original 1940s refill.

Sheaffer Triumph Valiant Tuckaway XF, Set in Box, Carmine, posted

This is a gorgeous, rare Sheaffer Tuckaway set. The Tuckaway was made in a few different models, this one being the Valiant, marketed primarily to men. Made of the exquisite, gleaming Carmine celluloid, with a transparent barrel and a matching striated section, this is a pen that's bound to bring a smile to your face. The set is in excellent condition, free of any flaws or blemishes, with just the faintest surfaces wear, difficult to see with the naked eye. The gold-filled trim is in equally great shape.

The pen is a fantastic writer! It lays down a consistent, self-assured, even cocky line of about 0.3 mm on my business paper. This puts it easily in the XF territory, possibly even XXF if you write on dry paper, such as Rhodia. However, the firm Lifetime nib has none of the "shortcomings" of a conventional XF nib, so it'll allow you to glide effortlessly across the page, with consistent strokes, in virtually all directions. A  modern Japanese XF nib will give you an equally fine line and smooth performance, but it will not be as good at rapid upstrokes and curves. It will also feel considerably more toothy than the Triumph and will have a very small sweet spot. Many of my customers who've tried the Triumph XF nib have been surprised at how smooth and forgiving it feels. I tuned it to write on the wet side, so that you can further enjoy that hovering sensation.

Sheaffer Triumph Valiant Tuckaway XF, Set in Box, Carmine, nib close-up showing excellent tipping geometry and alignment

If you write a business cursive or want to learn Spencerian handwriting or the Palmer Method, this will be an excellent tool with which to do that. It's a portable set, comes in the original box, and will fit in your favorite small case, such as Kaweco Sport. Posted, this "Tucky" converts to a full-size fountain pen and will feel comfortable even for people with large hands. And, it is so beautiful, don't you think?

Sheaffer Balance Vac Golden Brown Pen & Pencil Set, XF

(Not available for sale) This is an early 1930s Sheaffer Balance Vac-filler fountain pen and mechanical pencil set in striated Golden Brown celluloid, with a 14k gold Extra-Fine nib. This model is known as "350" or short, slender, measuring around 4.9" capped, and 0.422" in barrel diameter. The pen has been restored, which included a complete disassembly, a thorough cleaning, an overhaul of the filling mechanism, ink flow adjustment, nib tuning, and a gentle hand polish. The pencil has also been brought to a fully functioning condition. I work according to current "best practices" in the area of pen restoration and I use high-quality replacement materials and specialized tools.

Sheaffer Balance Vac Golden Brown Pen & Pencil Set, XF, uncapped, with the plunger slightly extended.

It's not easy to come across a beautiful set from the early 1930s, such as this. The material is in great shape, without any flaws or defects. The celluloid is deep, rich, and vibrant, with very good barrel transparency. The gold-filled trim is excellent, too. Frankly, this pen looks every bit as good as a modern pen fresh off the production line.

The phrase I wrote, which comes from a Sheaffer ad, sums up the pen's essence perfectly. Not only was the Balance a revolutionary design in terms of writing comfort, but it was also built to last, for people who wrote with a fountain pen all day, every day. An item that's as utilitarian as it is handsome. And now, having been restored, this set can be yours, and it is likely to give you years of dependable service.

Sheaffer Balance Vac Golden Brown Pen & Pencil Set, XF, showing the nib's profile and the excellent tipping material geometry. You can also see a very strong imprint here.

The 14k gold nib has quite a bit of spring, so it will give you a very pleasant writing experience, with a hint of line variation. If you push harder, I am sure the tines will open up. However, please, be careful so as not to spring the nib. It is ground to a perfect XF geometry, giving you a confident line, at the lightest touch. These pens were made to be written with a very light hand, so that's where this pen shines. It's perfect for business cursive or Spencerian handwriting, but it is tough enough to take a heavier hand, such as that used in modern block handwriting. A smooth nib, with a touch of tooth, required for the dependable writing performance, but in no way unpleasant!

Parker 51 Aerometric Pen and Pencil Set, Midnight Blue, F

(SOLD) This is a 1953 Parker 51 Aerometric fountain pen and liquid lead pencil set in Midnight Blue. The pen has a 14k gold Fine nib. The set is in unused condition (please, read about it further down the page). Because the connector's nipple was soft, I decided to replace it and fit it with a brand-new Pli-glass sac. The connector's nipple would sometimes softened over time, even if the pen was never inked. There's speculation as to why this happened, but the adhesive used must have played some part. I also tuned the nib and ink flow, and gave the pen a gentle hand polish.

Parker 51 Aerometric Pen and Pencil Set, Midnight Blue, Fm uncapped and showing a close-up of the section

This is such a gorgeous set! The Midnight Blue is among the most sought after Parker 51 colors, and for good reason, the color is deep, rich, and vibrant. The material has a hint of translucency. The gold-filled cap is in equally excellent shape, without any signs of use. A superb specimen of this iconic pen.

The phrase I wrote comes from a Parker advertisement. Being the "world's most wanted pen," Parker 51 was periodically in short supply, as the company was struggling to meet the demand. It's remarkable to think that, back in the early 1950s, the 51 was much like today's hottest electronic gadgets, particularly those made by Apple, being as functional as they were beautiful, even a status symbol and a popular gift for special occasions.

Parker 51 Aerometric Pen and Pencil Set, Midnight Blue, F, showing the Aerometric filling mechanism

The nib is incredibly smooth, but not overly polished. It writes at the lightest touch, laying down a consistent, controlled line. Parker's motto was "Writes dry with wet ink," which meant a superb ink flow regulation by the elaborate internal ink delivery system. Because of that, you can now use your Parker 51 in the office, writing on virtually any kind of paper, consistently, without the ink bleeding through or feathering. A fantastic performer!

Sheaffer Crest Touchdown Pen and Pencil Set, M

(SOLD) This is an early 1950s Sheaffer Crest Touchdown fountain pen and pencil set in Burgundy with gold-filled caps and a 14k gold, two-tone Triumph Medium nib. The pen has been restored, which included a thorough cleaning, an overhaul of the filling mechanism, ink flow adjustment, a nib tune-up, and a gentle hand polish. The pencil has been brought to full functional order, and comes ready to write with a fresh refill. I work according to current “best practices” in the area of pen restoration and I use high-quality replacement materials and specialized tools. The set comes in its original case.

Sheaffer Crest Touchdown, M, with the cap off and the Touchdown piston partially extended

This is a beautiful set! The Crest was the top-of-the-line item in the Sheaffer catalog at the time, and it shows. The set is in excellent condition, looking almost as good as new. There are no flaws or defects, just one small scratch on the pencil's body. The gold-filled caps are in equally excellent shape. Today, as in the 1950s, this set would make a great gift for a graduation, professional advancement, or a birthday. The phrase comes from a Sheaffer advertisement of the Crest, as it was the model that the Iowa company was proud of being used by the U.S. Diplomatic Corps.

Sheaffer Crest Touchdown, M, showing a profile of the Triumph nib and a clear ink view window

The Touchdown filling mechanism makes this pen a lot of fun to use! It's a system that is currently enjoying a small, but significant revival with the likes of the Edison Beaumont and Eversharp Pneumatic Oversized Decoband pens, and for good reason, as it's an efficient, easy to use, and downright cool mechanism.

The Triumph nib sold as a Medium, but I'd rank it closer to a modern Western Fine. A fantastically smooth writer, it glides across the paper effortlessly, laying down a consistent line. I tuned it to writes a bit more wet than Sheaffer originally intended so that you could take advantage of and enjoy your inks' color, shading, and sheen. You can flip the nib upside down for an XF line that's equally smooth and enjoyable. It would be very difficult to find a modern gold nib that feels as smooth, but without the unwanted effects of an overly polished writing surface, such as hard-starts and skipping.

If you've never owned a vintage pen, the Sheaffer Touchdown is a great pen to start, and this one, in particular, looks as great as it writes. It comes with a fully functional mechanical pencil so you can take it to work with you and enjoy an incredibly versatile set of writing instruments, and at an affordable price.

Parker 51 Vacumatic Demi Cordovan Brown Set, XF

(SOLD) This is a 1947 Parker 51 Vacumatic Demi fountain pen and mechanical pencil set in Cordovan Brown with a 16k gold-filled cap. The pen has been restored, which included a complete disassembly, a thorough cleaning, an overhaul of the filling mechanism, ink flow adjustment, a nib tune-up, and a gentle hand polish. The pencil has also been brought up to full mechanical order. I work according to current "best practices" in pen restoration and I use high-quality replacement components and specialized tools.

Parker 51 Vacumatic Demi Cordovan Brown Set, XF, with the cap and blind cap off

This is a very rare set! It's a "first-year" Parker 51 Vacumatic Demi, made in 1947, the year the Demi model was first introduced. It also features a rare, newly designed, 16k gold-filled cap and comes with a matching mechanical pencil. The Demi was Parker's attempt to market the 51 to women, who were quickly becoming a large presence in the workforce and a lucrative customer base. The phrase I wrote comes from a Parker 51 Demi ad, and it reflects the sentiment.

The Demi is slightly smaller and more spender than the full-size 51, but not by much. The pen posts beautifully, so it can still be enjoyed by men and women alike. Today, a restored 51 is as good an EDC pen as ever, offering its user comfort, reliability, good looks, and fantastic writing performance, day in and day out. The smooth, forgiving Extra-Fine nib makes it an ideal journaling pen, a great tool for learning and writing business cursive, or Michael Sull's American Cursive Handwriting. Even though Parker designed the 51 to write fairly dry, to meet the demands of the day, I like to tune it a bit of the wet side so you can enjoy that amazing gliding sensation but without flooding the paper with ink. The overhauled filling mechanism works efficiently and holds a lot of ink.

Parker 51 Vacumatic Demi Cordovan Brown Set, XF, capped

The set is in excellent cosmetic condition! There are no flaws or defects, just very faint wear to the body and a bit of wear on the pen's cap, toward the edge, all very difficult to see with the naked eye. Important: the slightly darker shade of brown toward the tip of the nib is supposed to be like that. The material is slightly transparent and there's simply more of it towards the tip, hence the darker area that you can see in a high-resolution photo.

Parker 51 Aerometric Burgundy Fountain Pen M-F Nib

Have you ever wanted to try the iconic Parker 51 but were apprehensive about buying one in an uncertain condition? Well, this pen might be for you. It's been lovingly restored and it now functions as well as it did when it left the famous Parker factory over half a century ago.

My restoration included a thorough cleaning, an overhaul of the filling mechanism (including a new Pli-Glass sac), ink flow adjustment, and nib tuning. I also replaced the time-softened connector with a custom-machined replacement. This is a fabulous writer, with a smooth medium-fine nib, tuned to write just on the wet site. A joy to use.

Cosmetically, the pen only has the slightest surface wear. The Burgundy color is deep and vibrant. The stainless steel cap is smooth and glossy. The jewel intact. Click on the image below if you're interested in ordering. The pen goes on sale tonight (June 19th, 2016).

Sheaffer Triumph Sentinel Deluxe Set

This is one of the most beautiful pens I've ever seen. I do, of course, acknowledge the fact that my love of this design is rather subjective, though I have a feeling that the incredibly stylish appearance of this set would appeal to a broad audience.

Sheaffer created the Triumph nib and feed system during a difficult time. World War II was raging overseas, while many American companies were tasked with manufacturing components for the war effort. Sheaffer was chose due to its precision machining prowess, the same incredible skill that allowed it to conceive of and bring to market this technological marvel.

The nib performs consistently, regardless of ink or paper. It's said to also do very well with atmospheric pressure changes, and is nearly leak-proof. The writing experience is particularly pleasant for people who come to the fountain pen hobby from years of using ballpoint pens, as it is very forgiving of angle and rotation. The nib is firm, but smooth. A truly pleasant pen to write with.

The vacuum filling mechanism is second to none in terms of dependability, ease of use, and ink capacity. One push of the plunger gets you more than half the barrel full of ink, but you can fill it to capacity using the two-stroke method, as described in this YouTube video.

The pencil works great, too, and comes with spare lead. There's also a nice hard case, though it is not as well-preserved as the pen and pencil themselves.
